Highlighting current and emerging counterfeiting and piracy threats in the UK and overseas. Including Trading Standards successful IP cases.

90% of those surveyed for the latest UK IP Crime Report by Anti Copying in Design said that copying of designs is intentional. This is shocking news and in the latest report, ACID highlights the issues faced by 3 ACID members in case studies from Black & Blum, Talking Tables and Morgan furniture. As well as continuing to articulate their concerns about 3D printing and unregistered EU designs protection for UK designers post Brexit, ACID also welcomes being part of this national IP Group to continue to articulate concerns about design issues and raise awareness with other stakeholders.

The Rt Hon Sam Gyimah, Minister for Intellectual Property said, The work of innovators, creators and inventors sits at the heart of the Government’s Industrial Strategy. Their ideas, supported by a stable business environment, offers us the opportunity to build on our strengths as we plan for a future outside the EU. Enforcing and protecting IP rights is undoubtedly one of these strengths.”

Chairman of the UK IP Crime Group Chief Constable Giles York said, “This incredible snap-shot of IP crime in the UK today identifies key themes, like emerging threats on supply chains, use of online content and complex technological systems that challenge our agencies at markets, ports and distribution centres.”

Dids Macdonald, OBE., CEO of ACID, said of the report yesterday, “I would like to congratulate the UK IPO for spearheading the continuing creation of this valuable annual UK IP Crime Report which serves to draw all interested stakeholders together to collaborate on continuing to raise awareness about the serious consequences of IP crime and, under the skilful chairmanship of Chief Constable Giles York, provides creative thought leadership with the ultimate aim of eliminating IP crime.”

The Annual IP Crime and Enforcement Report is a chance for everyone involved in the business of securing the reputation of the market to see the big picture. The report is written by members of the IP Crime Group and coordinated and presented by the Intellectual Property Office. It is an open, accessible forum where partners in the fight against IP crime can showcase best practice, make connections and better understand future challenges. Characteristic features of this report are the voices and opinions within it. These are the UK’s experts in IP enforcement and we are the UKs enforcement community. Contributions to this report can be broadly categorised as follows: enforcers – police, trading standards, border force and other public and private IP and fraud investigation and prosecution services; makers – manufacturers, merchants and trade associations and enablers – policy-developers, administrators and judges. All these groups share an objective: to eliminate IP crime. The contrasting observations of this diverse group strengthen our ability, as a team, to achieve our goal. In this year’s report some key themes emerge.
