Find out how ruthie L. designs utilises her ACID Membership Benefits to support her IP Rights!

When did you first start creating your products/designs?

I started ruthie L. designs in early 2015 & am now preparing to launch our first rug collection titled The Secrets of Nature Rug Collection & our five new wall art collections – Midsummer Collection, Retro Abstract Collection, Rainforest Collection, Natures Secrets Collection & the Blue Hole Collection.

Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property at that time?

The surface design courses I completed did cover intellectual property so I had some knowledge of it when started my business. When it became necessary for me to send through my high-resolution files all over the world I realised that I needed to better protect my work. Since then I have come to learn that there is a lot more I can do to protect my work & I have had legal agreements drawn up with all my manufacturers & printers  & also registered my designs.

Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefitted from being a member?I’ve purchased some of the ACID contracts at membership rates which have been very useful. I’ve also utilised the services of the ACID legal team who were not actually able to assist me directly but very helpfully put me in touch with their legal affiliates in Australia. I’ve also used the ACID Copyright & Design Databank to lodge my designs & that has given me peace of mind. I use the ACID logo on my website & on all my design proposals.

Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share? Yes, as I mentioned we’re preparing to launch our debut rug & wall art collections over the coming months, which is very exciting! As a business, ruthie L. designs will continue to  release more designs & will continue to ensure that each design is lodged on the ACID Copyright & Design Databank, to ensure that our IP is protected.

What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?I think for me the best aspect of being an ACID member is the ACID Copyright & Design Databank. It really is very reassuring to know that all my designs are lodged & that I can always prove that they are mine. One pound per design is a small price to pay for such a massive reassurance!

What advice would you offer to a new designer?

I’d advise any new designer to learn all they can about IP & their rights as designers. Don’t just send your work out to anyone & everyone. If you do, make sure you have a watermark on them & that they are in low resolution. Using the Member of ACID logo makes a world of difference & just lets people know that you know your IP rights & take them seriously.ruthie L. designs Facebook
