Member Focus – Nannolica

Find out how Nannolica utilises her ACID Membership Benefits to support her IP Rights!

When did you first start creating your products/designs?

Back in 1999 I used to paint Children’s murals and I designed and painted a bespoke ABC theme for a client which featured huge colourful alphabet letters around the room with animals and objects within them. It looked so beautiful and the little boy I painted it for absolutely loved them and it became quite an educational experience for him and his parents.  He was able to learn his ABCs from this mural and point out the different colours and images.  It was from this that I then decided to create a digital version of my alphabet design so I could share this with customers who weren’t looking to spend on a more expensive mural and that is where Nannolica began. To this day my ABC Name art is one of my most popular designs.

Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property at that time?

Yes, having worked as a Graphic Designer most of my career I was aware of Intellectual Property with regards to the use of photography, imagery and fonts but not so much in a creator being able to protect their IP for something like I was creating.

Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefitted from being a member?

I have been an ACID member since 2013 and have uploaded several collections of designs into the Copyright & Design Databank which just gives me that extra protection should I find anyone else copying my designs. It is just so reassuring for me that I have the use of the marketing material and most importantly the ACID logo as this definitely acts as a deterrent to would-be copiers!

Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share?

Yes, I have just designed a new collection of standard size prints, A4 and 8×10 inches. I normally sell my artwork framed as it is a non standard bespoke size, but by designing this collection, the customer is able to purchase my artwork at a lower price point and then choose the best frame for their artwork and their room. They are also embellished with glitter paper so are very sparkly and glittery, which I love.

What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?

Without doubt just the reassurance that you are part of a massive group of creatives and designers who have worked tirelessly to create and produce something innovative and simply want to protect their IP. Most of us haven’t got the money to register every single thing we produce with the IPO or EUIPO but by using the Copyright & Design Databank it gives me peace of mind that my designs have been logged and stored which gives me a better chance of proving they are my original designs should someone else blatantly copy them. It is so sad that there are just so many people now copying designs almost identically. It is great to be able to have social media sites like Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to promote new designs, but also exposes your work to people who are just out to copy something someone else has created and originated.

I also love that the ACID logo is so powerful in it’s design and I add this to all artwork proofs that I send out and feel like it is the first thing I can do to deter anyone that might think of copying my original designs.

What advice would you offer to a new designer?

Be true to yourself and don’t try and emulate any one else. Sure there are trends that we all follow and design influences that can be used, but take this and put your own stamp on it and just be unique to you. That way you will create work that you love and that works together and has your own hallmark and style within it.https://nannolica.co.uk/
