Since 1977, Aktion Plagiarius e.V. has been awarding the dreaded anti-prize “Plagiarius” to manufacturers and distributors of particularly bold plagiarisms and counterfeits. The aim is to raise public awareness of the unscrupulous business practices of product and brand pirates and to sensitise industry, politics and consumers to the problem. In addition, the appreciation of intellectual property, i.e. innovative and creative achievements, is to be increased. The “Plagiarius”-trophy – a black gnome with a golden nose – is a symbol of the exorbitant earnings product pirates collect at the cost of creative people and industry. This gnome was created to express the German aphorism “to earn oneself a golden nose” which means, “to earn a fortune”.

Entrepreneurs and designers who are annoyed about bold plagiarism cases will again have the opportunity to submit their original products as well as alleged imitations to the Plagiarius Competition and to propose the imitator – whether manufacturer or retailer – as a winner of the negative prize.
Before the annual jury of experts selects the winners from all entries, Aktion Plagiarius will inform the alleged imitators in writing of their nomination and give them the opportunity to comment. The large media coverage and the high degree of awareness of “Plagiarius” has regularly had a deterrent effect over the years: The fear of public embarrassment has led many a plagiariser to seek an agreement with the original manufacturer and, for example, to remove remaining stocks from the market, sign a cease-and-desist declaration or reveal suppliers.
“We are pleasantly surprised by the deterrent effect of the negative award “Plagiarius”. The awarding of the anti-prize has caused the Asian imitator to stop selling the counterfeits and to apologize to us. This has saved WIKA further legal proceedings and the associated time and above all costs! And the very large media response, which reaches as far as Asia, also discourages other imitators, so that we always have peace and quiet for some time.”
Ulrich Demuth, Head of Patent & Trademarks, WIKA SE Germany
The award ceremony will take place within the scope of a press conference at the “Ambiente” trade fair in Frankfurt. During Ambiente (February 07-11, 2020), all submitted originals and plagiarisms will be displayed in a prominent location. The award-winning products will then be presented to a wide audience both online and at Plagiarius exhibitions.
