Member Focus – Mathmos

1. Mathmos has an incredible heritage as the original creators of the lava lamp. Can you tell us more about how the brand continues to innovate while honouring its 1963 origins?

We both reappraise our classic designs introducing new colours and finishes and develop new lava lamp models some of which will become classics. We also invite interesting creatives from different worlds  like Duran Duran or Rankin to re-interpret our classic designs with their own fresh ideas.

      2. Your lava lamps are handcrafted in Britain with a unique long-lasting formula. What goes into ensuring that Mathmos maintains its reputation for exceptional quality and design?

A relentless focus on quality working closely with our manufacturing partners and internally and constantly looking at how we can improve. We introduce very few designs they need to bring something new and needed into our range of classics.

      3. As the inventors of the lava lamp, protecting your intellectual property must be vital. How has Mathmos approached IP protection over the years, and what challenges have you faced in safeguarding such an iconic product?

There have been a fair few IP challenges over our 61 year history, where to begin, a never ending story…

      4. Imitation products are a significant issue for many brands. How do you ensure that Mathmos customers know they’re purchasing the original, authentic lava lamp?

Well they don’t always, people often contact us asking for spare parts for other people’s lava lamps. Working directly with consumers D2C does help build and maintain our brand and our customer relationship. Strong trademark protection is also crucial to us.

      5. What are the most important and beneficial aspects of ACID membership to your business?

This is the second time we have joined. It’s a good discipline to refocus on our IP protection and actively manage it with ACID’s help.

      6. For a brand with such a rich legacy, what advice would you give to other businesses about the importance of intellectual property in protecting their creative assets?

You may not be able to afford to protect everything, everywhere. Choose what is most important, protect and promote that.

      7. What is Mathmos’s message to those who copy or imitate your original designs?

Lots of people copy our designs the oldest ones are out of protection now. We ignore them and encourage others to do the same. Design under protection we will protect with the full force of the law.

      8. From your perspective, has the issue of copying and IP infringement worsened for UK designers and manufacturers? What steps would you like to see the Government take to provide more robust protection?

      Make Amazon accountable.

Have you signed the ACID IP Charter, it’s free to sign and supports our campaigning side of ACID.
