In our latest Member Focus we want to share a fascinating insight into ACID members, Sam Jackman and Rosie Brave of Boost Innovations Limited. All the inside stories of our amazingly diverse membership all have one common theme – protecting their intellectual property to achieve growth and putting IP at the heart of their business strategy. Boost Innovations Limited is no exception!
When and why did you first start creating your products/designs?
We started developing Feel Good Breast Forms(R) in late 2016 but founded Boost Innovations and started engineering the product in earnest once when we joined the Design Council Spark scheme in 2018.
The inspiration for our product was Sam’s mum, who had breast cancer several years ago and did not like the breast prosthesis she received after surgery so she doesn’t wear it. Sam wanted her mum to have something she would wear and questioned whether a breast prosthesis needed to imitate skin-tone or have a nipple. She spotted the potential for it to be colourful and reflective of the wearer’s personality.
Rosie joined Sam to transform this from idea into reality, producing a range of colourful and decorative breast forms. After speaking with dozens of women in the UK to explore their experiences of life after breast cancer surgery, Rosie started using cut-out patterns, abandoning the idea that the breast form needed to be solid, and in so doing, addressing wearers’ common complaints of their prosthesis being heavy, hot and sweaty to wear.
Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property when you started your business?
We both worked in the creative arts education before starting Boost, so we knew protecting IP was important but had never needed to protect anything ourselves.
Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefited from being a Member?
We appreciate the ACID logo on our site, communicating our awareness of IP and in the past year we have applied for a patent and registered trademarks, which we’ve been able to get free legal advice on, thanks to our ACID membership.
Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share?
We are just about to launch our Feel Good Breast Form on 2 July on Kickstarter.com where we are asking people to pledge support us developing and producing our design in more sizes.
What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?
Being a member of ACID provides us peace of mind that we have experts to turn to if we need advice and clear information.
