DESIGNS SURVEY WORKSHOP: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF DESIGN PROTECTION

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our Designs Survey 2025 workshop! It was fantastic to see so many designers who care about the future of design protection to ensure their voices are heard.

During the session, we broke down the key areas of the survey, including cost, validity, speed, choice, and simplicity, as well as emerging issues like AI in design, sustainability, and small business challenges. Your input is vital in shaping a system that works for all designers.

The main message is to complete the questions using real data and experiences you have of any infringements you may have experienced and whether you have had challenges using the current design and IP legal framework.

For example,

  • What works and what doesn’t work?
  • What are the impacts, emotionally and financially, of any infringements on your business?
  • What are the financial obstacles for you to protect your designs.
  • What could be improved to better support your design business.

Questions 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 are self-editing so this is an opportunity to include any other comments you may have. For example, if you have experienced “David v Goliath” copying issues, tell your story. Are you worried about AI being able to use your copyright without permission unless you “opt out”. Do you suffer from online marketplace copying issues. Have you or your business experienced stress as a result of your designs being copied.  Do you believe there is enough deterrence against IP infringement? Is the cost of taking legal action an issue?

The Designs Survey 2025 is the last in a series of fact finding calls for views and a , questionnaire before the government will announce a long awaited Designs Consultation in the summer so it is a rare opportunity to influence and shape the future of the designs and IP landscape for UK designers. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) wants to know whether the current system truly meets the needs of IP creators. By taking just a few minutes to complete the survey, you can help push for stronger, more effective protection within design policy.

The survey closes on 1st April, so don’t miss your chance to have your say!
