Design Council CEO Stands Down

It is with regret that ACID has learned that Sarah Weir, OBE will be standing down as Chief Executive of the Design Council, a post she has held for three and a half years, because of illness.

Dids Macdonald, OBE, ACID’s CEO said, “I am saddened by this news. Having had the pleasure of working with Sarah right from the start of her tenure, I have been impressed with her broad vision to ensure that the strong and positive voice for design permeates every aspect of our lives. In delivering this compelling message, through all the Design Council’s activities, she has walked the talk and will be a hard act to follow”.

ACID has valued the significant research which went into producing the Design Economy which puts the facts and figures behind Design’s contribution to the UK’s GDP both nationally and through our exports. This has been invaluable to ACID in our work to communicate the importance of design to Government and the IP underpinning it. It also serves to remind policy makers of the numbers of people involved in design and design skills and the diversity of its reach. The fact that Sarah has done so much to create a bold and ambitious strategy will give the sector confidence for the future.

All at ACID owe a great deal to the Design Council for their advocacy and support under Sarah’s stewardship and we send her our warmest wishes in what must be such a challenging time.

Terry Tyrrell of the Design Council said, “Sarah has given outstanding service to Design Council over the last three and a half years. She is highly respected among trustees for her courageous, creative and inclusive approach. Amongst her many achievements, she has worked collaboratively with trustees to deliver a bold and ambitious strategy, resulting in a clear roadmap for the future. Having modernised Design Council in recent years, she has been able to lead the organisation remarkably through the COVID-19 crisis, enabling her team to switch rapidly to homeworking and online delivery. She leaves Design Council in an extremely strong position. On behalf of the board and staff at Design Council, I congratulate her and thank her for all that she has achieved”.
