Dids Macdonald OBE., Anti Copying in Design (ACID) commenting on the new team said, “It is important that the intellectual property underpinning one of the UK’s most valuable assets, the creative industries, is promoted, protected and supported in the UK and to achieve growth in international deals going forward and I hope that this will be one of the new DCMS team’s priorities.”
DCMS’ role in intellectual property is mainly through the department’s work as a champion for culture and media. The Creative Industries Minister sits in the department, whose work it is to enhance growth for creative businesses which includes enabling businesses to value and protect their intellectual property.
DCMS is responsible for the Creative Industries Sector Deal alongside the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), as well as the Digital Charter. This led to the roundtables between rights holders and online platforms to develop codes of practice with which to reduce online infringement in the UK. The Department is also working on the Online Harms White Paper.
