On British IP Day, we unite to recognise the vital role intellectual property (IP) plays in supporting the UK’s creative industries and the innovators behind them. IP rights protect the lifeblood of our creative sector—ideas. From designers to artists, each creator relies on a foundation of respect, ethics, and compliance in their work. However, these principles are only as strong as the laws that enforce them, and that’s where the ACID IP Charter steps in.
The ACID IP Charter, a powerful initiative by Anti Copying in Design (ACID), advocates for improved IP protections to safeguard the hard work and talent of the UK’s creative community. It is the creatives voices! Built around the pillars of Respect, Ethics, and Compliance in Design, the IP Charter calls on policymakers and industry leaders to recognise and protect the rights of designers. Today, more than ever, designers need IP laws that address the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital world, where ideas can be easily duplicated and shared without consent.
The significance of the ACID IP Charter on British IP Day is underscored by voices from industry leaders and designers alike.
IPO CEO Adam Williams emphasises, “I am pleased to continue the IPO’s support for the ACID IP Charter. Promoting respect and integrity for IP in designs is hugely important and this Code of Conduct is a great way to demonstrate that to the public and designs community alike”.
This perspective highlights the collective benefit that strong IP protections bring to the entire design community and, indeed, to society.
Lord Clement-Jones CBE., an ACID Ambassador, adds, “Design rights are a crucial part of our economy and our IP creators badly need better protection. I am passionate about better protecting the creative work of our designers”.
His words resonate as a reminder that ethical practices are foundational to sustainable and fair design industries.
Our ACID members also lend their voices, expressing the daily realities of design professionals working to protect their creations. These members serve as a powerful reminder of why British IP Day is important—not just as a celebration but as a call to action.
Sally Burrows of ACID Member, Pip & Elwood noted, “Many of my designs have been copied and I’ve seen so many copies of others. It’s so important to raise awareness of IP infringement and equip designers with the information and help they deserve in protecting their work”.
ACID Member, Rachel Corney Illustration, says, “Having your designs copied is devastating and as a small business it can be hard to know what to do about it. That is why it is so important to support ACID and it’s aims”.
