In honour of World IP Day, ACID Partner the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) chose to ask key questions about intellectual property (IP) to 100 consumers and 100 industry professionals in their community.
The key take aways:
- Only 15% of industry professionals felt confident in their understanding of IP rights, with around 25% being not confident at all.
- 40% of consumers didn’t realise using AI could infringe somebody’s IP.
- Just under half of industry professionals were concerned about being copied or accused of copying, and 75% of consumers were subsequently concerned about using somebody’s IP through AI.
These results speak to everything ACID campaigns for:
- Though there is IP awareness, knowledge is lacking
- Confidence in IP rights is low
- AI use is extensive but the impact on IP is not well understood
- Copying and being copied is a big concern
This is why ACID continue to push for better IP protection, education and enforcement. We oppose any move by Government to erode existing copyright law to allow generated AI training without attribution, transparency or recompense. We will always fight for fair protection and enforcement, especially for lone, micro and SME creators to counter David & Goliath copying, including the rise in online marketplace infringements.
