Member Focus – Ollie Holman

In our latest Member Focus we want to share a fascinating insight into designer, maker and ACID member, Ollie Holman. All the inside stories of our amazingly diverse membership all have one common theme – protecting their intellectual property to achieve growth and putting IP at the heart of their business strategy. Ollie Holman is no exception!

When and why did you first start creating your products/designs?

I began making sculptures at the age of 13, using scrap metal I’d salvaged, and found a love for creating functional sculptural design pieces. Since then I’ve kept to some simple design principles and core values, producing beautifully designed pieces to be regarded as sculptures, in their own right.

Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property (IP) when you started your business?

Not a clue! After researching online this only made me more confused, as someone who struggles with academic work I found it hard to understand intellectual property law and how to protect myself. It was only when I discovered ACID that this started to make sense. Thankfully ACID made the process of protecting the IP in my designs so simple and easy, allowing me to focus more time on the creative part of my business.

Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefited from being a Member?

I mainly utilise the ACID IP Databank. It is great to know my designs are safely stored on a secure third-party site and won’t be lost. This security gives me that extra bit of confidence to present my work compliantly. The creative community created by ACID’s forum allows for increased communication with other like-minded designers and visibility of others work.

Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share?

Yes, my first range of lighting products, featuring my ‘Lily Floor Lamp’; inspired by floral forms. The metal light shade is hand-beaten into form to capture random organic textures found in nature, creating a distinctive and unique piece every time. I have since created a whole range of lighting pieces in this crafted style. You can see more about this and more on my website: www.ollieholman.com/lighting-design

What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?

Peace of mind, in the knowledge, I have an online record of my designs and support from a trusted company.

What advice would you offer to a new designer?

Maintain confidence in your own work and do not be afraid to seek support from other creatives. Be open-minded, business growth can develop from many unexpected corners. I would also support your IP with ACID and make sure to show their logo on your website, and on other promotional material when sharing your work.
