Member Focus – Jenny Gordon Goldsmith

Since graduating from Kent Institute of Art & Design in 2000, Jenny Gordon has spent the best part of two decades honing her skills and developing her craft, applying her signature high standard of finish to bespoke pieces and collections. In our latest Member Focus we discover which are the most important aspects of ACID membership to Jenny’s company. We want to share a fascinating insight into this UK-based designer of bespoke jewellery, all the inside stories of our amazingly diverse membership have one common theme – protecting their intellectual property to achieve growth and putting IP at the heart of their business strategy. Jenny Gordon Goldsmith is no exception!

1. When and why did you first start creating your products/designs?

I graduated from the Kent Institute of Art & Design in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing Jewellery Design & Manufacture and had always wanted to continue with my goldsmithing & creating my own brand.

2. Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property when you started your business?

Yes. In my final year at the Kent Institute of Art & Design, I was part of the ‘New Designers Exhibition’ in London & so came across ACID (Anti Copying in Design) there. But it took years before I actually joined.

3. Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefited from being a Member?

I use the ACID IP Databank to lodge all my designs now. It gives me some security knowing that I’m taking steps to safeguard my designs by gaining third-party dated evidence of the origination of my designs. I plan to start uploading to the Marketplace too.

4. Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share?

I haven’t brought anything new to the marketplace recently. Having concentrated solely on bespoke pieces, gaining such pleasure from designing and making pieces for people over the years, I’m excited to introduce collections of my work. The design process lends itself well to exploring variations, perfect for building collections.  I draw inspiration from many different sources; ‘The Kiss Hug Collection’ simply grew from my signature!

5. What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?

The best aspect of membership for my business is the ACID IP Databank & the security I get from it by developing an auditable trail of evidence to support my ownership of the intellectual property in my designs, and knowing that I can rely on that, were I to ever encounter an IP infringement.

6. What advice would you offer to a new designer?

Don’t wait as long as I did to become a member & upload your designs to the IP Databank. I also think that registering your designs with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is a good idea too. Belt & braces approach. We can’t do enough at this time to protect ourselves from fraud.

7. ACID values the support of its members to enable it to campaign for design law reform. Do you have any messages for Government/Policy Makers on IP issues? Do you think that copying of designs is deliberate and blatant?

Yes I do think that copying is deliberate and I think it affects all industries. It is a terrible fact that there are so many designs being stolen or ‘adapted’ every day. I think it’s all about raising awareness. The more people are thinking about taking steps to protect their own work, the more they’re vigilant for others.
