When and why did you first start creating your products/designs?

I started creating products back in 2002, I was working as an interior designer back then, and I just felt compelled to start producing my own products with an innovative twist. I was always more of an inventive designer with original ideas.

Did you have any knowledge of intellectual property when you started your business?tl_files/2017/CP FreeForma - Raptor Man from my Menosaurus 7 book Sci-fi series.jpg

Back then I had no idea, I went around seeking IP lawyers in London (which was very expensive) before I discovered ACID and then I learned all about IP from ACID – simple practical ways to create a proactive IP strategy to deter and prevent copying.

Which ACID Membership services have you used and how have you benefited from being a Member?

I have always used the Copyright & Design Databank to upload my designs (in the old days we used to post in our designs) and also the legal advice and stationery. I use the ACID logo at trade shows and on my website and also when I pitch my ideas I show the ACID logo to really communicate that I know about my IP and I intend to protect it. In other words using the logo sends a clear message – do not copy my designs!

Have you brought anything new to the marketplace recently that you would like to share?

I am now predominately writing children’s fiction fantasy books. I love putting my innovative ideas into the characters and world building, creating the characters and giving them innovative functions. Writing has enabled me to express my innovative creativity in such a fun and in a rewarding way. I am also working on film scripts now and a fun animation short which will be out soon.

tl_files/2017/CP FreeForma Bike.jpgI guess the latest product is my FreeForma Surf Skate Bike, which is a Surf Skate motorbike design that you can actually ride. This was the latest tangible product I made. I originally drew the bike for a T-Shirt design and then I just had to make it!

What is the best aspect of ACID Membership for your business?

IP support, affordable IP support and the Copyright & Design Databank to give some firm third party evidence of when your designs were created, locking the dates you uploaded them. Having some sort of proof of when your original work was created is fundamental to your business going forward.

Research the market thoroughly before you even scratch your idea out on a blank piece of paper. Search and search as if you are wanting to buy this product for yourself, and search like your life depended on it! And if in the end you do not find it after days of searching, then you know it's possibly your original idea! Start drawing it, and protect it at all costs! Use NDA’S if you are showing your work to others (ACID has a confidentiality agreement in their online shop) and keep a chain of evidence when communicating, don’t get complacent about your work. Believe in yourself.
